Coins are the one category where selling to the wrong buyer costs the most, because two coins that look identical can be worth ten times apart. So the order of operations matters: rarity is checked before metal, never the other way round.
1. Read first. Date, mint mark, type and condition on every coin. A common bullion piece and a key date can sit in the same tube; weighing the tube would cost you the difference.
2. Metal value is the floor. Bullion and common-date silver are valued on their actual precious-metal content against the day’s live spot price. Content, not gross weight: a US 90% silver quarter carries about 0.18 troy ounces of silver, and an American Gold Eagle holds a full ounce of gold in a coin that weighs more than an ounce because it is alloyed for hardness.

3. Collector premium on top. Where a date, a mint mark, a grade or a holder makes a coin worth more than its metal, that premium is added and shown separately. Melt is the floor for us, not the answer.
